Questions?
Care, supplies, and helping your kitten settle in.
How much does a kitten cost?
Our kittens are typically $2,200 to $2,500 CAD, depending on the kitten, and a $500 CAD deposit reserves yours. We offer a discount to returning families and to new families adopting more than one kitten, and the same discount to anyone who refers a friend or family member. Please contact us for details.
What makes the Sphynx so special?
Sphynx are people cats. They are outgoing and affectionate, love to be close to you (and your warmth), and usually get along with everyone, including other cats and dogs. Many dog owners say a Sphynx gives them the best of both worlds.
Are they hypoallergenic?
No. Like every cat, the Sphynx produces the allergens that come from a cat's skin and saliva, not from its fur, so people with cat allergies can still react to them. If you have allergies, please visit us and spend time with our cats before you decide.
Are they hard to care for?
Not at all. With no fur, there is nothing to brush and no hair to vacuum up. Care comes down to a few easy habits:
- A weekly check. Clean their ears and nail beds, where a little skin oil collects, and trim their claws.
- An occasional bath. When their skin feels a little oily, it's bath time. Many Sphynx love warm water, so a bath quickly becomes a fun ritual for both of you, finished with cuddles in a warm towel. Between baths, a cat wipe is all you need. Bathing too often makes the skin produce more oil, so there is no need for a weekly bath.
- Good food. A healthy diet shows on their skin, too.
Do they get cold?
More easily than other cats, and that is part of their charm: expect a cuddle buddy who joins you under the blanket. A cozy or heated bed, a blanket or two, and a comfortably warm room keep them happy, especially in winter.
What do they eat?
Cats are obligate carnivores: they need a diet that is mostly meat and cannot properly digest plants. We feed our cats a high-quality raw diet, a balanced mix of meat, bones, organs, and supplements. Our raw diet page explains why, and how to make it easy at home.
What supplies will I need?
A carrier, food and water bowls, a litter box, a bed, a cat tree, a scratching post, toys, a nail clipper, and a few grooming basics. Your kitten comes with a starter kit, and our kitten supplies page has the details and our recommendations.
Do I need to keep my new kitten separate at first?
Yes, our contract asks for it. Give your kitten a quiet room of their own when they arrive. This short quarantine:
- Prevents illness from spreading between your kitten and your other pets.
- Lets your kitten settle in without being overwhelmed by new people, pets, and noises.
- Lets you watch your kitten's health closely and make sure they are eating and drinking normally.
- Gives you one-on-one time to bond.
- Teaches your kitten where to find food, water, and the litter box before exploring the rest of your home.
Our step-by-step introduction guide explains how.
What if I already have a cat?
Introduce them gradually. Cats are territorial, and a sudden meeting can cause stress, hissing, or fights. A slow introduction over days or weeks gives them the best start. Our step-by-step introduction guide shows how.
